The Pacific is heating up. And the world is about to feel the heat, as El Niño is getting stronger and may turn into a planetary weather disruptor with it influence could extend well into 2027. What begins thousands of kilometres across the Pacific could end up reshaping weather far beyond it – intensifying heat, disrupting rainfall, worsening droughts and floods, and putting fresh pressure on food supplies and communities already struggling with a rapidly changing climate.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has warned that the event could persist through February 2027. Scientists are now watching the ocean closely as vast stretches of unusually warm water spread across the tropical Pacific, raising fears that this could develop into a record-breaking “Super El Niño.”
And the numbers are startling. Sea-surface temperatures in the east-central Pacific could climb as much as 4°C above normal – potentially around 60% higher than the previous record. If that forecast materializes, the consequences could extend far beyond the ocean itself.

El Niño strengthening into 2027: What Is El Niño?
El Niño is a naturally occurring climate phenomenon associated with unusually warm sea-surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. It develops when the normal trade winds weaken, allowing warm water to shift eastward across the Pacific. This change in ocean temperatures can disturb atmospheric circulation and influence weather patterns thousands of kilometres away.
El Niño typically occurs every two to seven years and can last for several months to around a year. However, its consequences can persist longer because the atmosphere and oceans interact in complex ways. A strong event can alter rainfall and temperature patterns across different parts of the world, increasing the likelihood of drought in some regions while bringing unusually heavy rainfall to others.
This is happening on a planet already under extraordinary climatic pressure. Global temperatures are breaking records, extreme heat is becoming more intense, droughts are tightening their grip in some regions while devastating floods strike others, and rainfall is becoming increasingly unpredictable.
Now the Pacific may be preparing to turn up the dial again. El Niño is not simply a Pacific Ocean phenomenon. It is a planetary weather disruptor – and 2026 could be the year it makes its presence impossible to ignore.

A Stronger El Niño Could Mean More Extreme Weather
According to the WMO, there is a near 100% probability that the current El Niño will continue through February 2027. That does not mean every country will experience extreme weather throughout this period. El Niño’s effects vary considerably from one region to another.
But a strong event can shift the odds toward more unusual and potentially damaging weather. Some regions may experience prolonged dryness, threatening crops and water supplies. Others may face intense rainfall, flooding and landslides.
Tropical storms and typhoons can also be influenced by changes in ocean and atmospheric conditions associated with El Niño. This is why meteorologists are paying close attention as the phenomenon strengthens toward its expected peak later in 2026.

El Niño Meets a Warming Planet
El Niño itself is a natural phenomenon. Climate change, however, is altering the background conditions in which these natural climate events occur. The oceans have absorbed enormous amounts of heat from human-caused global warming. Exceptionally warm ocean temperatures can interact with natural climate variability, creating complicated and sometimes amplified risks. What Could El Niño Mean for South Asia?
South Asia deserves particular attention because millions of people depend on monsoon rainfall for agriculture, drinking water and hydropower. For Pakistan, a changing monsoon can have enormous consequences. Too little rain can damage crops and worsen water shortages, while intense rainfall arriving in short periods can increase flash-flood and river-flood risks. The challenge is not simply whether there will be more or less rain – but when, where and how intensely that rain arrives.
The Pacific May Be Sending a Global Warning
The Pacific Ocean may appear distant from everyday life in South Asia, Africa or Europe, but its temperature changes can influence atmospheric circulation across the planet. That is what makes El Niño so important.
A warming Pacific can reorganize rainfall patterns, influence heatwaves and droughts, affect tropical cyclone activity and create conditions for extreme weather in regions far from the original ocean disturbance. UN Secretary-General António Guterres described the situation as a warning that the planet is entering increasingly unfamiliar climate conditions. His message reflects a growing concern among climate scientists: natural climate variability is operating within a world that has already become significantly warmer.
Early Warnings Can Save Lives
The good news is that El Niño is not an invisible threat. Unlike some climate risks that are difficult to predict until they arrive, El Niño can be monitored months in advance using ocean observations, satellites and climate models. That provides governments and communities with valuable time to prepare.
The WMO says it is strengthening preparedness and early-warning efforts, working with partners across the United Nations and humanitarian system. Better forecasts can help farmers adjust planting decisions, governments prepare water supplies, emergency agencies position resources and health authorities prepare for dangerous heat. Early warnings are particularly important in developing countries, where limited resources can make communities more vulnerable to climate extremes.
Preparation Must Begin Before the Weather Turns Extreme
The coming months should therefore be treated as a period of preparation rather than panic. Governments should strengthen flood and drought preparedness, improve water management and ensure that climate information reaches farmers and vulnerable communities.
Agricultural systems need greater resilience. Cities need better drainage and heat-response plans. Hospitals and health authorities need to prepare for heat-related illness. Energy systems must be ready for changes in demand caused by extreme temperatures.
Most importantly, climate warnings need to reach people in a form they can understand and act upon. A forecast only saves lives when it becomes an early action.
A Warning for 2027
El Niño is a natural part of Earth’s climate system, but its arrival in an increasingly warmer world carries consequences that cannot be ignored. With the phenomenon expected to strengthen toward the end of 2026 and persist into early 2027, governments, farmers, businesses and communities have an opportunity to prepare for the risks ahead. The lesson is bigger than El Niño itself.
The planet’s climate is becoming more volatile, while human societies remain heavily dependent on stable weather patterns. We cannot stop El Niño. But we can improve our ability to anticipate its consequences, protect vulnerable communities and build stronger food, water, health and energy systems.
