Every year, billions of birds perform one of nature’s greatest journeys on Earth. They cross oceans without maps, navigate mountains and deserts, endure storms and darkness, and return to breeding grounds with astonishing precision.

Some travel thousands of kilometres between continents, following routes that have been repeated for generations. Yet most of us rarely notice this extraordinary movement taking place above our heads.

A tiny bobolink, for example, leaves the grasslands of North America and flies to South America. A Newell’s shearwater crosses vast stretches of the Pacific before returning to Hawaii. The critically endangered spoon-billed sandpiper travels between Arctic Russia and the coastal mudflats of Southeast Asia.

They are nature’s great travelers. But they are also becoming increasingly vulnerable. A major international scientific assessment published in 2026 examined more than 3,380 migratory bird species and found that more than half—51%—are declining. Behind that number are millions of individual birds struggling to survive journeys that have connected continents for generations. And their decline may be telling us something much bigger about the condition of our planet.

Migration is one of the most remarkable survival strategies on Earth. Birds move between breeding and feeding grounds in response to seasonal changes in temperature, food availability and habitat conditions. Some journeys span thousands of kilometres, crossing national borders and entire oceans.

The bobolink, for example, breeds in North American grasslands before traveling south to the Pampas of South America. The Newell’s shearwater crosses the North Pacific and eventually returns to Hawaii. The spoon-billed sandpiper migrates between Arctic Russia and coastal areas of Southeast Asia.

Their journeys are spectacular, but they are also fragile. A migratory bird does not depend on a single place. It depends on a chain of places. A safe breeding ground is not enough if a crucial stopover disappears. A protected wetland cannot save a population if its wintering habitat is destroyed. A bird may successfully cross an ocean only to find that the feeding grounds it depended upon have been transformed. For migratory birds, every link matters.

Why Are Migratory Birds Disappearing?

The 2026 assessment found that migratory birds declines are being driven by a combination of pressures rather than by one single threat. Among the major dangers are:

  • Destruction and degradation of forests, wetlands and grasslands
  • Loss of coastal habitats and tidal mudflats
  • Climate change and changing environmental conditions
  • Invasive species and predators
  • Hunting and capture for the pet trade
  • Toxic pesticides
  • Collisions with buildings and other structures
  • Birds becoming trapped as bycatch in commercial fisheries

The threats can occur thousands of kilometres apart. A bird may breed safely in one country, encounter dangerous conditions during migration in another, and spend the winter in a habitat facing destruction somewhere else. That makes migratory bird conservation one of the most complicated challenges in wildlife protection.

When the Sky Grows Quiet

Why should the decline of birds matter to people? Because birds are not simply beautiful creatures passing through our skies. They are part of the machinery of healthy ecosystems. Many birds help disperse seeds, pollinate plants and control insects. They transport nutrients between ecosystems and can provide valuable signals about changes in environmental conditions.

When bird populations decline, therefore, the problem may extend far beyond the birds themselves. A disappearing flock can be a sign of disappearing habitat. A shrinking wetland can mean fewer feeding grounds. A changing migration pattern can reflect changes in climate, food availability or seasonal conditions.

Birds can therefore act as living indicators of the health of the natural world. Their decline does not automatically mean that every ecosystem is collapsing, but it does provide important evidence that many ecosystems are under increasing pressure.

Scientists Can Now Follow Birds Across the World

There is, however, an encouraging side to this story. The science of bird migration has changed dramatically. Tiny tracking devices allow researchers to follow individual birds across enormous distances. Satellite tracking, automated radio telemetry, genetic research, remote sensing and citizen-science observations are providing scientists with an increasingly detailed picture of where birds travel and where they encounter danger.

These technologies are changing conservation from a process of simply protecting known habitats into one that can identify specific problems along entire migration routes. Scientists can increasingly ask not only where birds are declining, but also where and why those declines are occurring.

That distinction matters. If a particular stopover site is essential for feeding, protecting it could make a meaningful difference to the birds that depend upon it.

Protecting One Place Is No Longer Enough

For many years, conservation understandably focused on important breeding grounds, wetlands and protected areas. Those places remain essential. But migratory birds reveal a larger truth: nature does not follow our borders. A bird may cross several countries during one annual journey. Its survival depends on a network of habitats that may be managed by different governments, communities and landowners.

The international assessment therefore emphasizes the importance of understanding birds across their full annual cycle—from breeding grounds to migration stopovers and wintering areas. This means conservation must increasingly connect places rather than treating them as isolated islands.

Protect the breeding ground.

Protect the stopover.

Protect the wintering habitat.

Reduce the threats along the route.

And, importantly, make cooperation across borders part of the solution.

Hope Is Not Lost

The statistics are troubling, but they are not a declaration that migratory birds are doomed. Conservation has demonstrated that wildlife populations can recover when major threats are identified and addressed. The history of the bald eagle, peregrine falcon and osprey provides a powerful example. These species were severely affected by DDT, but restrictions on the pesticide, together with other conservation measures, helped their populations recover.

The lesson is important: decline is not always irreversible. The 2026 assessment argues that advances in science, monitoring and conservation provide opportunities to reverse many population declines—provided action is taken before species become endangered. The challenge is now to apply that knowledge at the enormous geographical scale of bird migration.

How Can We Help Migratory Birds?

Protecting migratory birds is not only the responsibility of scientists and governments. Individuals and communities can also contribute. We can:

  • Plant native trees, shrubs and other bird-friendly vegetation.
  • Protect wetlands, streams and natural habitats.
  • Reduce unnecessary pesticide use.
  • Make windows safer for birds to reduce collisions.
  • Keep domestic cats away from vulnerable wild birds.
  • Support responsible conservation initiatives.
  • Participate in citizen-science bird monitoring.
  • Avoid disturbing nesting and feeding areas.
  • Speak up for the protection of important natural habitats.

Small actions may seem insignificant when compared with the scale of global migration.

But conservation itself is built from countless local actions connected across landscapes.

A Future Worth Protecting

Every spring, millions of migratory birds will once again attempt extraordinary journeys across mountains, oceans, forests, wetlands and grasslands. They will follow ancient routes without passports or political boundaries. They will return to places that may have existed long before the cities and roads around them. But the question is becoming harder to ignore:

Will those places still be there when the birds return?

The fate of migratory birds is not sealed. We now have the science, technology and conservation knowledge needed to protect them across their journeys. The international assessment shows both the scale of the problem and the possibility of responding more effectively.

When a bobolink returns to a grassland, a shearwater finds its island, or a spoon-billed sandpiper reaches a surviving mudflat, it is not just a bird completing a migration. It is nature showing us that recovery is still possible. If we protect the pathways that connect the world, future generations may continue to look up each spring and witness one of Earth’s most extraordinary wonders: the return of the birds.
